Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation launches two books

Within the Award’s activities at the Climate Change Conference (COP27)- Sharm El-Sheikh,

entitled “Mejhoul Variety – The Jewel of Dates- ” book in its Arabic version, and
“Climatic map of the most important commercial date varieties in the Arab Republic of Egypt” book
In cooperation with the Agricultural Export Council.

H.E. Eng. Ahmed Samir: In light of the ongoing climatic changes, it is important to develop a climatic map for the date palm varieties’ cultivation in Egypt.

Dr. Abdelouahhab Zaid: The importance of the “Mejhoul Variety – The Jewel of Dates- ” book idea came from the important to refute all rumors about the origin of the Mejhoul variety, and the origin of its name.

Dr. Helal Al Kaabi: The “Mejhoul Variety – The Jewel of Dates- ” book was co-authored by 8 ministers of agriculture, 4 international organizations, and 44 researchers from 18 countries from across the world.

Sharm El Sheikh, Arab Republic of Egypt, 12th November, 2022.Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation General Secretariat, as part of the official delegation of the United Arab Emirates at the 27th Climate Change Conference (COP27), launched two important books, entitled “Mejhoul Variety – The Jewel of Dates- ” book in its Arabic version, and the “Climatic map of the most important commercial date varieties in the Arab Republic of Egypt” book, in cooperation with the Agricultural Export Council, which will be held at Sharm El-Sheikh during the period from the 06th-17th November 2022, where the books launching ceremony took place at the UAE pavilion, under the supervision of Dr. Abdelouahhab Zaid, Award’s Secretary General, and in the presence of H.E. Dr. Helal Humaid Saed Al Kaabi, member of the Award’s Board of Trustees, H.E. Dr. Ibrahim Hafidi, Director of the National Agency for the Development of Oasis and Argan Zones in the Kingdom of Morocco, H.E. Eng. Abdelaziz Al-Haraiqi, Director of the Hassan II Institute of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine in the Kingdom of Morocco, Dr. Sandra Piesik, and the Award’s participating team, as well as a number of experts, scientists, and guests.

 

Where their Excellencies Dr. Helal Humaid Saed Al Kaabi, member of the Award’s Board of Trustees, Dr. Abu Bakr Al-Bishri, Dr. Ibrahim Hafidi and Abdul-Aziz Al-Huraiqi praised the importance of the books launched by the Award’s General Secretariat of the Award, due to their importance in the support for decision-makers in the filed of date palm cultivation, production, manufacturing, export regionally and internationally, especially since the Arab region, the Arab Republic of Egypt and the Kingdom of Morocco are witnessing a steady growth in the date palm sector, where the Arab date festivals organized by the Award’s General Secretariat contributed under the guidance and support of H.H. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Presidential Court, and the follow-up H.E. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, Chairman of the Award’s Board of Trustees, in improving the reputation of Arabic dates and their international market demand.
During the speech of H.E. Eng. Ahmed Samir, Minister of Trade and Industry in the Arab Republic of Egypt, in which he presented the “Climatic map of the most important commercial date varieties in the Arab Republic of Egypt” book, where His Excellency added that in light of the existing expansion to establish specialized investment farms that apply international quality systems in all parts of its value chain, and following the climatic changes that the world is currently facing, it is of great importance to develop a geo-climatic map for the cultivation of the various date palm varieties in Egypt, and determine the best areas for planting each type in terms of weather conditions such as heat, humidity, rain and wind and the extent of the impact of the weather factors, environmental conditions, soil and water quality on producing these varieties with high quality according to their thermal needs, as a nucleus for developing an investment map on a scientific basis for date palm cultivation in Egypt in areas suitable for future expansion.

 

 

From his side, Dr. Abdelouahhab Zaid, Award’s Secretary General, pointed out the importance of the “Mejhoul Variety – The Jewel of Dates- ” book in its Arabic version, after launching the first English copy of the book during the opening of the Seventh International Date Palm Conference, which was held on the 19th of March 2022, in Abu Dhabi, where the idea of this book is very important because it came to refute all the rumors that arose about the origin of the name of the Mejhoul variety.. The experts involved in preparing the book confirmed that the origin of the variety is the Tafilalet region in the southeast of the Kingdom of Morocco.

H.E. Mr. Abdel Hamid El Demerdash, Chairman of the Agricultural Export Council for Agricultural Crops in the Arab Republic of Egypt indicated that the Council is one of the main Egyptian contributors to the support and development of the agricultural export sector, of which dates are one of its most important pillars, and in light of what we have seen from the possibility of raising the economic value of Egyptian exports, if more efforts are to be made in order to promote Egyptian date exports, and based on the role of the Council to support the success of these efforts for the development of the Egyptian dates sector, the Council took the initiative to establish a committee for date palms and adopted a strategy to revive the culture of exporting dates at all stages of the supply chain. Where the idea of reorganizing investments in the date palm cultivation sector in Egypt, which began with the need to design a categorical map of the types of dates that can be cultivated in Egypt and the appropriate places for them, as well as the places suitable for future expansion of the cultivation of date palm varieties and dates that are compatible with the effects of climate change and complies with the full investment map for the production and export of dates as a step aimed at rationalizing and maximizing date palm cultivation in Egypt.

Dr. Helal Humaid Saed Al Kaabi, Member of the Award’s board of trustees, “Mejhoul Variety – The Jewel of Dates- ” book was co-authored by Prof. Abdelouahhab Zaid, Award’s Secretary General, and Prof. Abdallah Oihabi, and with the contribution of 8 ministers of agriculture from Mejhoul producing countries (UAE, Egypt, Sudan, Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Morocco, Mauritania), in addition to the participation of 4 international organizations (ICARDA, ACSAD, AARINENA, and AOAD). In addition to 44 researchers and academic experts from 18 countries from across the world.

From his side, Dr. Abdelouahhab Zaid, Award’s Secretary General, commenting on the “Climatic map of the most important commercial date varieties in the Arab Republic of Egypt” book, during his speech in the introduction to the book, that given the steady growth of date palm cultivation in the various governorates of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and the interest of H.E. Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, in planting (5) million date palm trees in the Toshka project, taking into consideration the leading position that the Arab Republic of Egypt has reached in the production of dates worldwide, as it was necessary to produce a book that reflects the climate map to locate the cultivation of the most important date palm varieties in Egypt, to serve as a road map and guideline that helps private sector companies and investors wishing to expand in this sector to choose the right variety and the right place, commensurate with the thermal equation for each type compared to the climatic conditions of all governorates and regions in the Arab Republic of Egypt. The book contributes to enhancing investment opportunities in the date palm cultivation sector in the Arab Republic of Egypt, as well as achieving the required economic feasibility.
